The China Experience: An MSU Exploration of Arts & Culture aims to create dynamic programming through events and dialogues held throughout the year focusing on the arts and culture in Greater China. It will officially run from February 20, 2015 to August 30, 2016 throughout the MSU campus and surrounding community. (There was a soft launch event in Fall term 2014 with the opening of the exhibition, Future Returns: Contemporary Art from China at the Broad Art Museum). The China Experience: An MSU Exploration of Arts & Culture explores China through diverse activities including Chinese art, film, music, performances, lectures, events, and exhibits. By inviting guest speakers on China to the MSU campus including artists, scholars, authors, musicians, and filmmakers, we seek to explore a country that is rich in history and contemporary art, and that, in many respects, lies at the forefront of social change.
This themed year strengthens the University-wide focus on China's cultural awareness and cuts across multiple strategic imperatives including Bolder by Design: enriching the student experience, global inclusiveness, and engaging the community.
The China themed year furthers the University-wide strategy of engaging in cross-cultural learning and collaboration. This themed year is especially timely given China's growing prominence on the global stage and the increase in global connectedness throughout the world.
- Inform and educate the MSU campus and greater community about Chinese art and culture
- Showcase MSU faculty and student work through music, art, film, and events
- Help integrate MSU students from China into the MSU campus and surrounding community
We will accomplish these goals through development and execution of creative programming, engagement in open dialogue and discussion, and by encouraging active student, faculty and community involvement in China themed-year activities.
As a globally engaged, research-intensive university, MSU has created The China Experience: An MSU Exploration of Arts & Culture to showcase China-related faculty and student work; to inform and educate the campus and broader community regarding Chinese arts and culture; and to foster increased integration of students from China into MSU life, as well as expanded overall cross-engagement between cultures for all involved.
The lives of MSU faculty, students, and the broader community are significantly informed and enriched by exposure to Chinese traditions, heritage, and cultural awareness, that provides a deeper understanding of the Chinese arts, culture and its people.
