Children/Youth - Programs and Camps
The following are MSU programs that are offered to children and youth.

Music
- 4-H Children's Garden Musical Mondays (for children of all ages, this casual concert series features local musicians that will be "fiddling around" in the amphitheater during the noon hour)
- Annual MSU Clarinet Spectacular (includes performances and master classes for clarinetists of all ages, with special activities for high school and middle school students). View the 2008 Season Brochure for more information
- College of Music, Community Music School (music education—quality instruction, related music services, and educational programs—for interested individuals of all ages and levels)
- Detroit Public School Music Partnership (College of Music faculty, students, and performing ensembles partake in coaching, mentoring, shared performances, exchanges, adjudications, interactive lectures, and co-curricular development in Detroit Public Schools)
- High School Strings Invitational (This workshop for high school string players, this workshop culminates in a final concert in the Cobb Great Hall, Wharton Center). View the 2008 Season Brochure for more information
- Jazz in Detroit with the Arts League of Michigan (Jazz Studies faculty and the Arts League of Michigan teach, mentor and serve as role models to middle and high school jazz musicians in Detroit)
- Jazz Kats -- Jazz for Kids (for grades 5-8, this program is modeled after Jazz at Lincoln Center's highly successful programs for youth)
- MSU Horn Day (a full day of horn events includes a guided warm-up session, solo master class, orchestral excerpt session, horn choir rehearsals, and recital). View the 2008 Season Brochure for more information
- MSU Tuba-Euphonium Day (for high school students, events include guided warm-ups, recitals, master classes, and large tuba-euphonium ensemble reading session). View the 2008 Season Brochure for more information
- Performing Arts Camp for Drum Majors and Color Guards (four-day sessions provide participants with an instructionally-intensive experience that prepares them to lead and perform in a variety of settings)
Dance
- High School Dance Clinics (an excellent chance for teams to learn new material together for games or other events they participate in during their season)
- Lil' Dancers Clinics (an excellent opportunity for young dancers to have fun while spending a day with the MSU Dance Team.)
Multimedia, Film, and Design
- 3D Modeling and Animation Summer High School Camp (creative and technical development of 3D models as they can be applied to video games, animation and special effects)
- Audio Production Summer High School Camps (two camps for high school students provide instruction in podcasting and the basics of recording)
- Digital Cinema Summer High School Camp (students aged 14 and up create a short digital movie from start to finish using professional techniques)
- Introduction to Film (ENG 230H) (a Program for high achieving students who are currently in grade 9, 10, 11, or 12)
- Video Game Design Summer High School Camps (for high school students aged 14-18, these camps emphasize the basics of 2D and 3D video game design using creativity and modern software technology)
Theatre
- 4-H Children's Garden Theatre Thursdays (for kids of all ages, the All of Us Express Children's Story Theater troop performs in the amphitheatre once a month this summer)
- Act One Series (program features nationally touring youth theatre production companies in one-hour shows designed to educate and entertain young audiences)
- MSU Science Theatre (performances demonstrate basic scientific concepts and inspire audience members to develop an appreciation for science in their everyday lives)
- Seats 4 Kids (program provides free tickets to local youth who could not otherwise afford to attend a performing arts event)
- Summer Circle Theatre (for high school students interested in theatre, free shows performed each summer on the banks of the Red Cedar River)
- Young Playwrights Festival (high school students are invited to write and submit one-act scripts to a juried competition; finalists scripts are performed at the Wharton Center by MSU Department of Theatre students)
Art
- 4-H Children's Garden Camp Monet (for ages 7 and up, students will use inspiration from the garden to make projects that involve sketching, painting, sculpting, dying, weaving and much more)
- From Art to Science: Igniting Stellar Imaginations (an educational experience inspiring art through the discovery of the physical universe)
- Kresge Art Museum's Creative Kids Programs (this series of programs provides interactive experiences with the visual arts. Ages vary per program and are geared to introducing kids to Kresge's art collection, as well as engaging students with a hands-on activity)
- MSU Museum Youth Art Gallery (art projects created by area students that explore and express natural and cultural history or museum exhibits in drawings, paintings, collages and photography projects)
- Saturday Morning Art (SMArt) (opportunities for youth ages 7-18 to engage in the study of art across a range of media and methods including ceramics, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture)
- The Kresge Art Museum's Summer Art Camps (teens explore, enjoy, and create original art during the course of a week)
Humanities
- 4-H Children's Garden Stories in the Garden (teens read stories to younger children - a magical time of fun and learning)
- 4-H Children's Garden Writer's Workshop (for young writers ages 7 and up who want to learn about the wonderful world of writing in the garden)
- American Sign Language Browser (kids of all ages can look up video of thousands of ASL signs and learn interesting things about them)
- China Adventure (provides a three-week enrichment experience for high school students in contemporary Chinese culture and language)
- China Panorama Video Series (series covers many areas of Chinese language and culture)
- Chinese Language and Culture Online Courses (online courses in Chinese language and culture are appropriate for middle and high school students)
- Chinese Language Online Tutoring (connects native Chinese speaking tutors and students in real-time audio to provide superior immersive support to Chinese language learning, practice and use)
- Chinese Language and Culture Summer Day Camps (camps include Chinese language instruction, hands-on art and culture, Chinese games and sports, meals, and recreational activities)
- Explore Africa (offer activities that give special attention to the arts and cultural expressions of Africa, such as art, music, dance, literature, and cinema. For students entering grades 10-12)
- German Culture Saturday (events are open to children ages 4-14 and no knowledge of German is necessary)
- German Summer Camp for Kids (two-week afternoon camp for children ages 7-14 is theme-based and includes a variety of topics, activities, games, and hands-on as well as visually activated learning)
- German Summer Camp for High School Students (free, one-week afternoon camp for high-schoolers is designed as an immersion camp with all activities conducted in German)
- German for Kids Academic Program (weekly academic program for children aged 7-14; children practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing in German)
- Great Lakes Folk Festival (free, unique fusion of arts fair, music festival, county fair, multi-ethnic festival, hands-on activity workshop, and celebration of cultural heritage)
- Greenrock: High School Writers' Retreat (an opportunity for high school students to develop their creative writing skills)
- Historic Kellogg Manor House Tours (Manor House represents an important and fascinating time in Michigan's history, and students of all ages will enjoy learning as they explore this beautiful estate)
- Intensive English Program (instruction to international students who need to improve their English language skills before beginning academic coursework)
- Intensive Studies in Humanities, Arts, Language, and Literature (ISHALL) (an accelerated, intensive two-year course in literature and language designed to meet the curricular goals and merit standards of high school English, grades 9-12, in two years)
- Internet Sourcebooks for Japanese, Korean, French, German, and Spanish (a one-stop online resource for language learners)
- Kids Classics Club (to encourage children to explore the history, literature, and language of the ancient world)
- Michigan-Shiga Student Exchange Program (designed to promote friendship and understanding among Japanese and American high school students)
- MSU Museum's Folkpatterns Program (kids learn how to recognize architectural parts of a barn and farmstead as they photograph and document barns in a survey project)
- Spartan Debate Institute (a 2-week, 3-week, and intensive 4-week institute with judged tournaments)
- Spartan Writers Camp for Elementary and Middle School Students (students visit various campus locations and incorporate these experiences into their writing)
- Summer Adventure Series at the MSU Museum (kids spend 4 action-packed mornings exploring Michigan's fossils before the dinosaurs)
- Summer Journalism Workshop (gain cool skills, meet new people, experience a Big Ten campus and learn from outstanding instructors)
- World Languages Day Workshops (a free, all-day conference for high school students, teachers, and parents. Participants can choose from a wide variety of sessions on language, culture, globalization, and general information about MSU)
- ZON: Chinese Online Game (a unique interactive multiplayer online role playing game for learning Mandarin Chinese and Chinese culture)
