The research and the exhibit are collaborative projects being carried out by a team of researchers that includes the MSU Museum, Ohio University, Southern Utah University, and Tanzanian collaborators and students from the University of Dar es Salaam. A bilingual (KiSwahili and English) version of the exhibit first opened at the National Museum of Tanzania in Dar es Salaam, and now companion exhibits are set for the U.S. - in East Lansing and Athens, Ohio - as well as regional sites in Tanzania, including the cities of Arusha and Mbeya. The project was funded by a National Science Foundation grant aimed not only at the research questions being addressed, but also at achieving a broader impact through interpreting the research to the public.

Wharton Center: Cobb Great Hall - Directions

Time of Event: 8:00pm

The Moscow Festival ballet was founded in 1989 when legendary principal dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet Sergei Radchenko sought to realize his vision of a company which would bring together the highest classical elements of the great Bolshoi and Kirov Ballet companies in an independent new company within the framework of Russian classic ballet. Leading dancers from across Russia have forged under Radchenko’s direction an exciting new company staging new productions of timeless classics. Wharton Center’s engagement will feature Coppélia, a full-length sentimental comic ballet in three acts; music by Leo Delibes; choreography by Arthur Saint-Leon. The story of Coppélia, concerns a mysterious and faintly diabolical inventor, Doctor Coppélius who has made a life-size dancing doll so life-like that Franz, a village swain is infatuated with it, setting aside his true heart’s desire.

Esperanza Spalding -

(Performance or production; )

Wharton Center: Cobb Great Hall - Directions

Time of Event: 7:30pm

Price: $35

If “Esperanza” is the Spanish word for hope, then Esperanza Spalding could not have been given a more fitting name. She will, in fact, challenge and expand your perceptions of jazz, and might well be the hope for the future of jazz and instrumental music. Blessed with uncanny instrumental chops, a multi-lingual voice that is part angel and part siren, and a natural beauty that borders on the hypnotic, the “20-something” prodigy-turned-pro takes a completely fresh and refreshing approach to jazz by incorporating the rich traditions of soul, pop, world music and so much more.

Suffering is an enormous turn on.

In the Blood by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks showcases her unique verbal agility and poetic vision. In the Blood is a retelling of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. Rather than indicting Puritan society, Ms. Parks shows us a world of social services unequipped to help the modern day Hester Prynne. The play is an examination of fault, blame and honor. Ms. Parks will be discussing her work on campus April 5th.
